About Hobbs, New Mexico
Hobbs is a city with a population of 34,122 as of 2010 and it is located in Lea County, New Mexico. The city was founded in 1907 when James Isacc Hobbs (1852-1923) established a homestead. He then proceeded to name the settlement after himself. It wasn't until 1910 that the first post office opened with James Hobbs himself being the first postmaster. Looking one year forward to 1911 there were about 25 landowners in Hobbs, NM.
Once the big oil discovery by Midwest Oil Company occurred in 1927 the settlement started to rapidly expand and the first refinery was built the following year. With Hobbs growing so rapidly the town was officially incorporated only one year after the refinery being built in 1929.
During the peak of this first oil boom, the town had over 12000 people living in Hobbs. This all came to an abrupt end when the Great Depression hit causing oil prices to plunder and the population suffered greatly as a cause. In 1931 the population fell to about 3,000 but this would not last long.
Looking forward a few years to 1940, the population in Hobbs climbed back up to 14,000 and the oilfield was booming. Then something would happen that would shock the world for years to come.
Following the devastating attack on Pearl Harbor, Hobbs Army Airfield was built on the north side of town. Hobbs Army Airfield was used by the United States Army Airforce Air Training Command as a Flight Training Center. By 1948 the War had been ended for a few years and life was returning back to normal for the city of Hobbs. During this time the Hobbs Army Airfield was decommissioned and the land was later on reacquired by the city of Hobbs, New Mexico.
